The Swedish pavilion from the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai will now be given new life in the eco-city of Caofeidian that is being built 250 km east of Beijing. There, it will be part of an innovation park where this distinctive building will be the main attraction.

Caofeidian will be a new city with a projected future population of 1,000,000 people. Sweco has been active in planning parts of the eco-city, which has high ambitions in the environmental area.

“The pavilion has been dismantled and will be reassembled during 2012. It will be a central feature of the park, which we have chosen to call ‘Spirit of Innovation Park’ as a reflection of the Swedish theme at the World Expo,” says architect Christer Stenmark, who supervised work on the Swedish pavilion.

He is also one of the driving forces behind the proposal for the design of the building’s new environment.

The park will have four main themes: art, play, nature and innovation. The park will showcase examples of Swedish innovation together with both temporary and more permanent art exhibits. In addition, there are plans for labyrinths where children can play. Another idea is to move the two Dala horses and Pippi Longstocking house Villa Villekulla that stood outside the entrance to the Swedish pavilion.

During the World Expo the Swedish pavilion was visited by around 4 million people and won several prestigious awards.
