This is Arlanda’s most popular prawn sandwich – according to passengers

The passengers have spoken: this is Arlanda’s most popular prawn sandwich! In the run-up to Prawn Sandwich Day on 14 October 2024, Swedavia and Stockholm Arlanda Airport have established an award for the airport’s best-selling prawn sandwich so far this year, and the clear winner comes from artisan bakery Gateau.
“We are very pleased to have been named the top choice of passengers when it comes to prawn sandwiches,” says Alan Salih, Unit Manager at Gateau.

With 120 grammes of hand-peeled, MSC-labelled prawns atop specially baked Danish rye bread, Gateau’s prawn sandwich was Arlanda’s best-seller from January to September 2024. During a ceremony at the Marketplace in Terminal 5, Alan Salih, Unit Manager at Gateau, was presented with flowers and the official title of owner of Arlanda’s best-selling prawn sandwich in 2024.

“For us, it’s the overall experience of the prawn sandwich that is the most important thing. There should be just the right amount of prawns, mayonnaise and salad. And the bread is key, of course. Our Danish rye bread, Odense, provides the base for the prawn sandwich and we believe it has the perfect mix of sweetness and richness and that the sunflower and other seeds take it up an extra notch,” says Alan Salih.

Prawn Sandwich Day on 14 October is a theme day that was instituted by Stockholm Arlanda Airport in 2010, to celebrate the fact that Arlanda and its sister airport Landvetter together sell several thousand prawn sandwiches every week. From January to September 2024, over 48,000 prawn sandwiches have been sold at the airport, ranging in price from SEK 99 to SEK 395 each.

“The prawn sandwich is a popular product that is strongly associated with travel and airports. Over 17 million passengers travelled through Arlanda during the period January to September 2024. During the same period, 48,256 prawn sandwiches were sold at the airport. Arlanda’s best-selling prawn sandwich of 2024 can be found at Gateau in Terminal 2, Terminal 5 and SkyCity, priced at SEK 189. The airport’s second-best-selling prawn sandwich is served at your table at Nordic Kitchen & Bar at the Marketplace in Terminal 5 and is a slightly more luxurious variety (SEK 295) containing 200 grammes of hand-peeled, MSC-labelled prawns on Danish rye bread.
