Swedbank Robur has today as the first Swedish financial institution signed the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge. In total, 37 banks, asset managers, insurers and impact funds have committed to collaborate, engage and assess their own biodiversity impact and develop targets and reporting on biodiversity by 2024.

Initiated by the members of the EU Finance & Biodiversity Community the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge is a collective commitment by the finance sector itself. The Pledge was established by a group of European financial institutions which have been working actively as members of the Finance and Biodiversity Community, a community of practice hosted by the European Commission. The first phase of the Pledge was launched by a group of 26 financial institutions during the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2020. With the eleven new signatories today, a total of 37 financial institutions will represent 13 countries, spanning Australia, Europe and North America.

"Collaboration cross companies and countries is essential to successfully drive change in a positive and sustainable direction. We are a proud signatory of this pledge. The focus on biodiversity goes well with Swedbank Robur’s Climate Strategy – to align our managed fund capital with the Paris Agreement by 2025 and carbon neutral 2040," says Liza Jonson, CEO of Swedbank Robur.

Biodiversity is an area closely connected to the climate issue and the sustainable development in society. The earth’s biosphere is fundamental to human resilience and progress.

"It is urgent to include biodiversity issues in a clearer way and integrate it as a vital part of the public sustainability discussion. It is crucial that we work and engage to protect the biodiversity and reverse nature loss in this decade. Swedbank Robur wants to actively be part of the change and transition that is needed," says Eva Axelsson, Chief Sustainability Strategist at Swedbank Robur.

The new signatories will be presented during a European Business and Nature Summit (EBNS), organized by the European Commission and its partners on December 9, 2020.
