Swedbank’s Green Bond Impact Report 2021
Swedbank’s Green Asset Register increased by SEK 26.3 billion during 2021, to SEK 44.7 billion. The increase enabled Swedbank to issue three green bonds during the year and the bank now has outstanding green bonds in all major currencies: EUR, USD and GBP, as well as in SEK.
Swedbank targets and supports financing in sectors that are adapting to a more sustainable society. Green financing enables Swedbank to meet our customers’ growing demand and need for green loans. It also contributes to the realisation of Swedbank’s strategy.
Swedbank is committed to directly transferring back to the business areas any potential discount in the funding cost when issuing a green bond. This further incentivises the bank’s efforts to grow the volume of green lending.
Green construction loans and green property loans are two offers that were launched during 2021. Green construction loans are suitable for construction companies that are building energy-efficient properties that meet industry standards for sustainability, such as LEED or BREEAM. Green property loans are aimed at companies investing in energy-efficient properties that meet Energy Class A or B or that have relevant environmental certifications.
Two new groups of specific assets were added to the Green Asset Register during the year: Energy Class A and B residential buildings in Sweden, and the ALTUM Energy Efficiency Programme in Latvia. Accordingly, the size of the Green Asset Register increased considerably, enabling the bank to issue three green bonds. Swedbank has five senior unsecured bonds outstanding in the capital market, with a total outstanding value of SEK 30.5 billion.
The high activity in green bond issuance in 2021 is in line with the bank’s commitment to ESG and overall strategy. Swedbank is committed to remaining an active issuer in the sustainability bond market. This will in turn enable financing of green investments.
