Talkpool and partners are launching the world’s first smart floor drain
Talkpool participates in an IoT project to develop embedded wireless water leakage detectors integrated with floor drains. This solution address part of the 5 billion SEK annually cost from water damages in Sweden (of which 3 billion SEK on insurance costs). The IoT water leakage detector can reduce cost by detecting potential damages earlier. The project has currently passed the testing phase, where full floor sections have been built up with the leakage detectors, floor drains and water seal. After having successfully passed this testing phase with a focus to detect the most common leakage problems, the next stage is to continue with small scale deployments in Q1 as well as further commercialization and preparation for a large-scale release of the product.
Talkpool, with its background in radio technology and expertise in the Internet of Things, provides the sensing element and communication technology. Talkpool has several IoT solutions in the market that are fit for large scale deployments, this project is in line with that strategy. As Stefan Lindgren, Talkpool’s CTO comments: “The use of IoT sensors has the potential to create huge values for organizations such as insurance companies and property owners. The smart water leakage detector is a perfect addition to our existing smart buildings offering”. Talkpool’s wireless sensing system functions over large distances, allowing for cost-efficient scalability. It detects issues in the wet seal or other installation errors that can lead to costly damages.
Other areas of the development are covered by Talkpool’s partners in the project. One of them being a leading manufacturer of sanitaryware for bathrooms and kitchens, while a leading company in building environment services is partnered to the project through their expertise in damage inspections related to water and moisture. Finally, one of Sweden’s largest insurance companies is the initiator of the project and an organization that can potentially make large savings based on the IoT water leakage detector. On average, the water damages that are addressed with this solution cost insurance companies 70.000 SEK per case. This cost is expected to be significantly reduced.
The initiative is also supported by the ongoing roll out of a LoRa network by Nordic IoT Networks.
After pilot installations in buildings during Q4-Q1, Talkpool and partners will industrialize the solution and target a commercial launch during 2019.
