TARAMAR was created by Dr. Gudrun Marteinsdottir (Runa), professor of marine biology at University of Iceland and her husband, Dr. Kris Kristbergsson, professor of Food Sciences at same University. Runa says that “since 1979, we have conducted research on marine ecosystems and food sciences with a focus on edible super food from marine sources”. We have published more than 200 peer reviewed scientific papers on our research and since 2012, we have transferred part of this research into the development of the TARAMAR skincare. Our aim has been to created solutions that are 100% toxic free and contain no harmful, irritating, or endocrine disrupting chemicals. To do this we had to invent a new technology NoTox® (patented by us), that enables us to boycott all conventional preservatives, as these are the chemicals that create havoc inside our bodies. In fact, the resulting TARAMAR line is truly a food for the skin, nourishing it from its deepest cells and changing skincare forever.

Using innovative technologies and slow cosmetic processes, Runa and Kris developed unique skin-actives from the Icelandic nature. Runa said that “during this extensively long preparation period (> 12 years), we learned that all parts of the process line, from seeding, harvesting, extracting, formulating, and packaging are vitally important and by carefully designing each step to maintain the natural frequencies of the powerful plants and seaweed, we were able to create skincare that is different from everything else on the market. As we were developing skincare for our own use, we did not cut any corners when it came to achieving maximum quality and functionality. Some of the processes became quite meticulous and time consuming, as we found that gently teasing out the natural actives over a very long time (even 6 months), returned skin-active compounds of unbelievable potency.

It is quite challenging to achieve a TRUE purity in skincare. Not many people know that the production of skincare is a dirty business. More often than not, the facilities are not food grade and need to be fumigated for insects every day.
Setting up TARAMAR in Iceland, we are lucky in many ways. First of all, we have access to some of the purest water in the world. Also, there are few insects in Iceland and none are found inside our houses. Therefore, we do not need to fumigate or worry about infestation.
As we, professors of marine and food sciences, did not have an experience with production of skincare, we set out to design our own method, the NoTox technology. Being free from any pre-programmed ides of how skincare should be made, we set up our processes as we would in making food. For this reason, the TARAMAR handcrafted process line is food grade aligned to a very high sanitization standard. As a result, facility differs from what you see in the industry. It is indeed fit for a food production and is sparkling clean. No toxic or harmful chemicals are allowed anywhere in the process; not even strong soaps or anything that can create harmful effects for either us, the humans or our precious nature. Indeed, technically, the run-off from our factory can be digested.
