What: Teaching Matters is celebrating 20 years of helping to increase teacher effectiveness and improve student outcomes. Since 1994, we’ve worked in about half of New York City’s public schools. This year, we’re honored to have Chancellor Carmen Fariña and Jody Spiro, who heads the Wallace Foundation’s educational leadership initiatives across the country, talk about the best ways to train, hire, support and evaluate principals. Jane Williams of Bloomberg Radio will moderate the discussion.

Why: Teaching Matters has supported teachers and leaders for more than 20 years in urban schools.  We recognize the central role of principals in making their schools excellent learning environments for students and accelerating student gains. In this conversation, we hope to spread awareness about school leadership's impact, challenges and opportunities.

Who: Chancellor Carmen Fariña, named head of New York City’s Department of Education in December, 2013; Jody Spiro, director of Education Leadership at the Wallace Foundation; Jane Stoddard Williams, host and producer of Bloomberg radio’s weekly look at education, Bloomberg EDU; Teaching Matters’ leadership; and about 175 guests, including educators, public officials, non-profit leaders, and education advocates.

When and Where: Noon – 2 p.m., the Harvard Club, 32 W. 45thStreet, New York, NY (entrance for media)

Contacts: Sharon Rubinstein, 212 870-3505 ext. 8; cell 703-901-7947, srubinstein@teachingmatters.org; Kate DiLello, 212-870-3501, kdilello@teachingmatters.org

Teaching Matters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing teacher effectiveness, one of the most critical factors in student success. Our services transform how educators work together at urban public schools, helping the most effective teachers develop the skills they need to lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement. We also partner with school leadership to create a work environment that equips teachers to succeed in the classroom. From nearly 20 years of working in New York City’s public schools, we’ve developed an understanding of realistic and lasting ways to improve student outcomes, and we’re committed to real, measurable results. Visit www.teachingmatters.org to learn more about how we’re making a difference for students and teachers at public schools.
