Shares Overview at Council of Great City Schools Conference, 10/23/14

What: At the Council of Great City Schools (CGCS) conference, we will formally announce our micro-credentialing pilot, beginning this year with 150 New York City Department of Education teachers. Teaching Matters will offer micro-credentials (or “digital badges”) to participating teachers who demonstrate nationally recognized teacher leadership competencies in their day-to-day practice.

The program will include an initial induction phase, coaching, observation of practice, and data collection. Each micro-credential will be embedded with meta-data showing evidence of each individual teacher’s expertise and capacity to lead.

Why: This pilot builds on the growing field of practice that recognizes specific outcome-based skills people acquire and demonstrate in the workplace. Our micro-credentials are designed to give teacher-leaders a new, more transparent and measureable way to demonstrate the in-demand skills necessary to improve student achievement and sustain highly effective instruction in urban schools.

We are pleased to share our work at The CGCS conference. CGCS represents the largest 100 school districts in the nation and their annual conference brings together superintendents, education leaders, policy makers and innovators to exchange best practices and thought leadership in urban education.

Who: Teaching Matters is well positioned to offer this exciting opportunity for teacher-leaders. We have supported teachers and leaders for more than 20 years in urban schools, and data and evidence gathering have been key parts of our practice. Our badging plan is informed by knowing just what data and skills are truly necessary to properly build and assess effective teacher-leaders.

When and Where: 9:15-10:30 AM, 203 AB, mezzanine level, Hilton Milwaukee City Center, Wisconsin Center

Teaching Matters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing teacher effectiveness, one of the most critical factors in student success. Our services transform how educators work together at urban public schools, helping the most effective teachers develop the skills they need to lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement. We also partner with school leadership to create a work environment that equips teachers to succeed in the classroom. From nearly 20 years of working in New York City’s public schools, we’ve developed an understanding of realistic and lasting ways to improve student outcomes, and we’re committed to real, measurable results.
