OSLO, Norway – 2 June 2015 – Birdstep Technology (www.birdstep.com), a leading provider of Smart Mobile Data solutions, has joined the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), alongside 21 other new members. Birdstep will now play an active role shaping development of next generation Wi-Fi networks and in particular the WBA’s Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) initiative.

Next generation Wi-Fi is absolutely critical for emerging wireless services such as premium video and mobile conferencing that require ubiquitous and continuous high quality service. This will require more consistent coverage as well as transparent and yet secure authentication at least matching that of existing cellular services.

“Birdstep is delighted to be part of this major movement towards full carrier grade Wi-Fi,” said Lonnie Schilling, Birdstep CEO. “We will have a lot to contribute across all aspects of the NGH initiative and especially helping ensure that operator policy can be applied effectively to Wi-Fi services.” Schilling added that next generation Wi-Fi would also help bring on services based on location and the fast emerging IoT (Internet of Things).

Membership of the WBA has expanded swiftly in response to the demand for carrier Wi-Fi and now stands at 108 members including major operators such as AT&T, BT, Orange and Comcast, as well as equipment makers like Cisco, along with Google and Intel. “The swift expansion of the WBA membership portfolio is testament to the realization that Wi-Fi is becoming ever more integral to the fabric of the digital world,” said Shrikant Shenwai, CEO of the Wireless Broadband Alliance. “We are delighted to welcome these new members to the WBA to help accelerate the growth of Wi-Fi into new and exciting areas.”
