Teesside University ranked best in the North East by students
Teesside University was the top-ranked university in the North East in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) 2026 following outstanding feedback from students.
The WUSCAs are the UK’s largest annual awards decided entirely by students, with reviews gathered through campus visits and the WhatUni website.
Teesside University was number one in the region in seven categories, including:
- University of the Year
- Student support
- Career prospects
- Lecturers and teaching quality
- Facilities
- International
- Students’ Union
It was placed within the top 10 nationally in six categories including University of the Year, demonstrating its sector‑leading performance.
The results reflect consistently high praise from students, who highlighted the supportive staff, modern facilities, industry-focused courses and inclusive campus environment.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Simpson said: “This recognition is particularly meaningful as it comes directly from our students.
Their overwhelmingly positive feedback highlights the impact of the work we are doing across the University to create an outstanding learning environment and the real difference it is making to their lives.”
Teesside University was also recently named Times Higher Education University of the Year 2025 and Daily Mail Modern University of the Year 2026.

Notes to editors
Every year, WhatUni collects tens of thousands of reviews from students across the country through campus visits and their website, using the data to calculate the winners of the annual WUSCAs.
Not all UK universities take part in the WUSCAs each year. To be involved with the review collection and WUSCAs, an institution must have an institution profile and course listings on whatuni.com and meet eligibility criteria. Universities that do not participate may still have a profile on the WhatUni website, but they are not included in the WUSCA rankings.
