Telelogic DOORS® Plays Role in Joint Strike Fighter Program - JSF Program Office Uses Telelogic DOORS for Requirements Management - MALMÖ, Sweden and IRVINE, California - May 8, 2002 - Telelogic, (Stockholm Exchange: TLOG), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, today announced that its DOORS requirements management software was used by the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program Office and prime contractors for the US$200 billion program. Telelogic DOORS is the world's leading requirements management tool according to the Standish Group in its latest industry report entitled, "What are your requirements? 2000". During the initial design stages in the early 1990s, the large volume of analyses and supporting information on requirements for the JSF program became too extensive and diverse to manage successfully using manual procedures. As a result, the JSF Program Office contracted Holmes-Tucker International, Inc., a specialist in the development of state-of-the-art systems engineering and requirements traceability systems, to implement a Requirements Management System (RMS). Holmes-Tucker created a RMS based on Telelogic DOORS to maintain an in- depth audit trail of changes and associated rationale for all requirements-related documents produced by the Program Office to facilitate rapid and precise impact analysis of requirements changes. "We always understood the conceptual value of having the ability to link and track individual requirements and their complex relationships to multiple references. But it really wasn't feasible until we started using DOORS," said Robert Pastusek, President of Holmes-Tucker. "On the JSF project, DOORS enabled us to provide our customer a cross-reference between numerous requirements and requirements-related documents, totaling thousands of pages, where each requirement is tightly linked to its justification. DOORS has enabled a well-organized requirements management process for the program." By implementing DOORS, it is possible for individuals to quickly and easily determine where each requirement came from, its rationale, the associated cost and tradeoff studies, and other requirements that could be impacted by changing it. As such, DOORS enables gap analysis between requirements documents to ensure consistency and continuity across the requirements spectrum. For the JSF program, major requirements categories include Survivability and Supportability. Some contractual data from the RMS Database was provided to competing aerospace contractors in DOORS format. "The fact that DOORS was used to help support what is the largest procurement program ever taken by the Department of Defense is a testament to its robust capabilities and industrial-strength quality," said Anders Lidbeck, president and CEO of Telelogic. "Though the highest levels of automation, communication, visibility and accessibility, DOORS helps increase productivity and efficiency, while at the same time reduce cost." DOORS Benefits Using DOORS as the core engine of the RMS was a major factor in enabling Holmes-Tucker to significantly streamline the requirements management process. The DOORS-based RMS system is now saving up to 50 percent of the traditional document processing time on the JSF project, and has significantly improved document configuration management. According to Pastusek, the advantage of combining DOORS and the extensive Microsoft Interface developed by Holmes-Tucker is the ease with which non-technical users can participate in the requirements management process. "DOORS allows our experts to generate draft requirements documents in Word that are electronically distributed for review by hundreds of non-technical users at many different government agencies. These are the people who will eventually fly, maintain and support these new systems. They mark up the documents using Word's 'Track Changes' feature, then send them back to the Program Office," he said. "Once the comments are adjudicated by the controlling agency, the data is automatically imported into DOORS, enabling us to capture and track their individual comments, changes and justifications." DOORS - Best-in-Class Product for Managing Requirements DOORS is a multi-platform, enterprise-wide requirements management tool designed to capture, link, trace, analyze and manage a wide range of information to ensure a project's compliance with specific requirements and standards. About the JSF Program Lockheed Martin recently won the competition to build the JSF in a program valued at approximately US$200 billion. The fighter, designed to replace the A-10, the AV-8 Harrier, F-16 and the F/A-18, is a stealthy, supersonic, multirole aircraft designed for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, as well as the U.K. Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. Lockheed Martin, along with Northrop Grumman and BAE SYSTEMS, will produce an initial 22 aircraft in the program's US$25 billion System Development and Demonstration (SDD), formerly known as Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase. Plans call for more than 3,000 aircraft over the life of the US$200 billion program.
