Telelogic Introduces ActiveCMtm - The Industry's First Transparent Configuration Management System - Unlocks the Benefits of Configuration Management Without Requiring Employees to Change How They Work by Hiding Approximately 90 Percent of Typical User/CM System Interactions - MALMÖ, Sweden and IRVINE, California - April 29, 2002 - Telelogic (Stockholm Exchange: TLOG), a global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, has extended its technical leadership of the change and configuration management (CM) tool market with the introduction of ActiveCM. This revolutionary new capability, available exclusively through Telelogic Synergytm as an optional feature, is the first truly automated and transparent CM solution for software developers. Prior to the introduction of ActiveCM, organizations struggled to obtain a high return on investment from CM systems. While the benefits were compelling, developers often resisted using "passive" CM systems due to their steep learning curve and the new routines they required. Integration with third-party software development tools was often unreliable, and the necessary administrative tasks and training reduced productivity and increased overhead costs. As a result, despite the business benefits, adoption of CM systems has been slow. According to Gartner Group Vice President Jim Duggan, "about 50 percent of mainframe shops and 75 percent of distributed shops have inadequate CM solutions, often home grown." Telelogic Synergy with ActiveCM overcomes these issues by hiding 90 percent of typical user/CM system interactions. Unlike "passive" systems, virtually all of the mundane, manual processes common to CM systems are hidden from the user and occur automatically. Because users do not realize that they are "using" a high-end CM system, ActiveCM provides advanced configuration management capabilities without requiring users to change their work habits. As a result, organizations can finally overcome user resistance to CM systems and capitalize on the benefits these systems offer. ActiveCM builds on the success of Telelogic Synergy, a product that revolutionized the software development industry with its powerful task- based change management methodology. Through this approach, Telelogic greatly advanced CM for software development teams by minimizing build errors and replacing time-consuming, file-based check-in operations with the intuitive grouping of activities into change-driven tasks. ActiveCM enhances these capabilities and raises the bar for features and functionality with its transparent "always on" operation and seamless integration with today's software development environments. ActiveCM is a complementary user interface that offers a different and more transparent way of working with an advanced CM system. It is not intended to replace Telelogic Synergy interfaces. "With ActiveCM's rapid and active usage model, drastically shortened learning curve, and quick deployment in small and large organizations, Telelogic is once again dramatically changing the way software developers interact with CM," said Ingemar Ljungdahl, Telelogic's chief technology officer. "Instead of a painstaking manual procedure that eats up valuable development time, Telelogic Synergy with ActiveCM works silently, powerfully, and invisibly to transparently manage version and configuration information from start to finish. As a result, ActiveCM refutes the arguments developers have against version management/configuration management products once and for all." According to Ljungdahl, Telelogic is in the process of patenting its ActiveCM technology. "In today's quickly changing business environment software configuration management (SCM) is critical to business success and profitability," said Dick Heiman, Analyst, IDC. "Companies that make a robust SCM system an integral part of application development will have a clear advantage in terms of greater productivity and faster time-to-market with error- free applications. Moreover, SCM tools that are easy-to-use and, ideally transparent, will encourage more widespread acceptance and adoption." Advanced Capabilities of ActiveCM ActiveCM greatly facilitates the use of Windows desktop development tools with Telelogic Synergy through an easy-to-use, intuitive usage model that does not require extensive training. Users at all levels on the software development team can begin using Telelogic Synergy with ActiveCM within 30 minutes of installation since the CM functions are available in familiar and regularly used Windows-based tools, such as Windows Explorer. With its capabilities for transparent version management, intelligent tool integration, and an active usage model, ActiveCM delivers the following benefits: Transparent Version Management Routine CM activities - such as changing, renaming, and creating new files - are completely automated and require no manual operations. Because these changes are recorded and checked out automatically and transparently by ActiveCM, software developers are not interrupted or distracted by the CM system and can spend more time on value added activities. In addition to increased productivity, transparent CM increases the quality of the developers' work since manual errors are eliminated. "The use of Telelogic CM Synergy at BMC Software is an integral part of the success of our software development strategy," said Fred Wells, Manager of PM&D Applications at BMC Software. "Synergy's ActiveCM requires minimal interaction with the configuration management system while proactively maintaining all changes to our software assets. This will increase the quality of our applications while enforcing reliable and repeatable software processes." Intelligent Tool Integration Unlike other CM systems, Telelogic Synergy with ActiveCM does not require specific installations for each Windows-based Integrated Development Environment (IDE) such as Microsoft's Visual Studio.net or Borland's JBuilder, for example. As such, the software development team can work in their preferred IDEs and use build tools they are already familiar with, such as 'ant' for Java development. ActiveCM checks out changed files automatically during builds, ignores superfluous temporary files, and facilitates the addition of new filters for transparent integration with new tools. The capability for intelligent tool integration simplifies and accelerates the deployment of Telelogic Synergy, as well as any new tools added to the development environment. Administrative tasks are also greatly reduced since a separate integration procedure for each IDE is not required. Active Usage Model Because ActiveCM version management operations occur in a separate "channel" automatically, users can continue development tasks without interruption or delay while ActiveCM is working transparently in the background. This active usage model simplifies advanced capabilities such as directory versioning, introduced by high-end CM systems, and makes it easy for new users to grasp these complex concepts. As a result, users throughout the organization can participate in a task- based development team and leverage all of the benefits of a high-end CM system like Telelogic Synergy. "At BMW, the reliability of legacy and embedded software systems is critical to our success," said Dr. András Merey, Manager of the SCM department, BMW. "The task-based CM Synergy together with ActiveCM is the key to this success and it works perfectly for both small and large teams." Additional information on Telelogic Synergy with ActiveCMtm is available at www.activecm.com. Availability ActiveCM is currently shipping and is available for Windows NT/2000/XP. ActiveCM requires an installation of Telelogic CM Synergy 6.2.
