Telelogic Introduces Telelogic Tau® 4.4, the First Commercial Development Tool to Leverage "Scenario Synthesis" Technology - Latest Tau Release Reduces Errors, Costs and Time-to-Market through Rapid Creation of Executable Applications from High-Level Scenarios - MALMÖ, Sweden and IRVINE, California - July 8, 2002 - Telelogic, (Stockholm Exchange: TLOG), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, today announced the availability of Telelogic Tau 4.4, the latest release of the company's tool suite for rapid development of real-time and other advanced software. The Tau portfolio consists of a set of best-in-class tools: Tau UML Suite for analysis, systems and software modeling and object- oriented design; Tau SDL Suite for design and implementation of real- time software; Tau TTCN Suite for conformance testing; Tau Logiscope for software quality assurance; and the recently introduced Tau/Tester, a state-of-the-art tool suitable for testing a wide variety of applications in diverse industries. Among many enhancements included in Tau 4.4 is the addition of "Scenario Synthesis", the first time this technology has been used in a commercial software development tool. This latest advance allows rapid and inexpensive creation of software prototypes by automatically translating easy-to-read use case scenarios into complete software systems. As a result, product behavior can be demonstrated and validated much earlier in the development process, significantly reducing errors, development costs and time-to-market for software development projects. "Getting quality feedback from end users and other stakeholders is crucial for the success of complex systems and software development projects," said Ingemar Ljungdahl, chief technology officer at Telelogic. "The new Tau 4.4 will help our customers ensure at the earliest stage that their projects are on the right track, resulting in improved quality, reduced costs and faster development." Tau's new Scenario Synthesis capability is powered by technology licensed from Telelogic partner KLOCwork, a Canadian-based software company specialized in reengineering solutions. The Scenario Synthesis can optionally be combined with user interface simulators such as Altia FacePlate and E-Sim RapidPlus(TM) together creating a powerful visual prototyping solution, which not only facilitates fast input from end users on the look-and-feel of the system, but also ensures that the behavior of the application has been tried and approved before further development. Addressing one of the Software Development Industry's Key Challenges Scenario Synthesis technology provides a solution to one of the software industry's biggest challenges. Project success in systems and software development increasingly depends on early feedback from stakeholders so corrections can be made when it is most cost effective to fix. However, obtaining quality feedback on static and informal specifications is extremely difficult. Running prototypes is an excellent vehicle for soliciting meaningful stakeholder feedback, but prototyping with traditional development tools is typically too costly. In contrast, the Scenario Synthesis capability of Tau 4.4 enables the rapid creation of executable applications from high-level scenarios expressed as industry- standard Message Sequence Charts (MSC). "The ability to create virtually zero-cost working models will allow time-pressured development teams to demonstrate results quickly and help them get the requirements right early in the project," said Per Blysa, director of product management for Tau at Telelogic. "In addition, this technology has the potential to improve later stages of testing, for example by automatically creating models of how the environment of the system behaves." Cris Kobryn, chief technologist at Telelogic and co-chair of the UML Revision Task Force in the Object Management Group (OMG) adds, "Use cases and sequence diagrams are both extremely popular UML modeling techniques, but up until now it has been difficult to integrate them, let alone execute them directly. Telelogic with Tau 4.4 now brings this model-driven solution to the market and shows that our tools are the ideal way to get a jump-start on the important benefits that users expect to realize from the OMG's Model Driven Architecture and the U2 Partners' UML 2.0 proposal." Additional Telelogic Tau 4.4 Advances In addition to its Scenario Synthesis capabilities, Tau 4.4 offers a number of additional powerful features, including: Tau UML Suite Enhancements · Improved integration between Telelogic DOORS and Tau UML Suite - Telelogic continues to integrate requirements management with software design. Tau 4.4 provides direct navigation from DOORS objects to UML artifacts, which creates a more intuitive way to connect requirements with software assets. · C++, COM/IDL and Ada 95 code generator improvements - Tau 4.4 allows the developer to leverage more features of the target language while preserving the important model-code relationship. · Simplified UML model reviews - More detailed information on modification dates of UML diagrams are now shown in the browser, aiding model inspection and audits. Tau SDL Suite Enhancements · Greater control and speed of semantic analysis - Tau is one of the few toolsets on the market that allow semantic analysis of visual models, which helps the developer find errors at an early stage. Tau 4.4 provides the developer with more control during analysis, reducing the time spent on model checking, and creating clearer results. · Extended printing functionality - developers and technical writers will all benefit from more flexible printing functions in the SDL Suite, with better table-of-contents formatting and a host of new user preferences. · Simulator usability improvements - the possibility to simulate systems during construction gives Tau users great advantages. Tau 4.4 introduces a number of enhancements to the SDL simulation that speed up software debugging. · Simplified SDL model reviews - Model reviews are simplified through more powerful difference/merge commands that present a full picture of all changes. · Improved ASN.1 utility for generating a configuration file - ASN.1 is the type definition language of choice in many of the latest communication technologies, including 3G. The built-in Tau SDL Suite ASN.1 encoder/decoder offers reduced code size and improved performance of encoding/decoding procedures. Tau TTCN Suite Enhancements · Automatic generation of import/export commands in TTCN modules - Allows the test engineer to reuse TTCN declarations across TTCN test suite modules, which saves time during test suite development. · Extended support for ASN.1 -The Tau TTCN Suite offers a state-of- the-art ASN.1 encoder/decoder for testing of new communication devices. Tau 4.4 introduces automatic generation of ASN.1 Types By Reference, which saves time and efforts when using ASN.1 to define data in TTCN test suites. In addition, TTCN Suite 4.4 provides support for 'REPLACE BY' for constraint values, which is also bound to be a major time-saver in ASN.1-based test development. Availability The Telelogic Tau 4.4 release consists of UML Suite 4.7, SDL Suite 4.4 and TTCN Suite 4.4, and is available now on leading Windows and UNIX platforms.
