Telenor had SVT hack the system
Today, Swedish Television (SVT) releases its investment in cyber security - the TV series Hacked. In six episodes, viewers get to follow security experts as they try to hack into personal accounts and companies. In episode six "Hotet från främmande makt", Telenor participates as the company that is subjected to a hacking attack.
- The purpose of the TV series is to increase the knowledge and awareness regarding cyber security in society and how we can protect ourselves. The participation gave us an opportunity to contribute in matter and at the same time learn more, says Ulf Andersson, Information Security Manager at Telenor.
The hackers form what in cyber security exercises is called a Red Team. The pre-condition is that they have access to internal computers and are located in Telenor's premises. From Telenor Ulf Andersson participates together with security expert Marcus Lundblad and a Blue Team consisting of defenders who follow the hackers' movements.
- The exercise we carried out is completely in line with our daily way of working, as we expose ourselves in order to find vulnerabilities before cyber criminals do so. Among other things, we have a Bug Bounty program via YesWeHack which means that ethical hackers receive compensation if they find vulnerabilities, says Ulf Andersson.
Telenor has been working in a structured manner with security issues for many years and is at the forefront with advanced solutions and a number of ongoing projects to constantly improve its security.
- All organisations have vulnerabilities. Those who say they don’t are not serious. The important thing is how we work to stay ahead of the criminals. Like many others, we are exposed to real attacks. We treat every attack as a serious one, no matter if it is an exercise or a sharp incident. We never pay extortion money but instead work hard to close the gaps, Ulf Andersson concludes.
