TeliaSonera International Carrier today announced that Japanese media operator - NEXION - has selected its Media Connect Occasional Use service for delivering HD broadcast feeds from this year’s Wimbledon 2010 tournament in London to Japan for two key broadcasters.

From 21 June - 4 July, TeliaSonera International Carrier’s Media Connect service will be delivering HD video feeds from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club to the TeliaSonera Media Nodes in the London Docklands, and then switching the feeds to the USA - where hand-off occurs to NEXION, the Japanese media operator which is headquartered in Tokyo.

Seiji Konno, Senior Vice President, NEXION comments: “Working with TeliaSonera International Carrier means that Japan tennis fans will get to experience the tournament at its best as it happens. They presented us with an innovative and creative fibre based HD end-to-end solution that ensures that our broadcast feeds have the highest quality and performance, without limitations on bandwidth. At the same time, the extensive event experience of the TeliaSonera team – such as their delivery of Swedish Football League programming – gave us the confidence that they will able to execute a complex solution with ease.”

NEXION will be benefiting from TeliaSonera International Carrier’s Media Connect service, an international fibre based media network designed for broadcast, high quality video distribution. It enables the delivery of HD broadcast quality video content across more than 100 points of presence in 35 countries across Europe, the US and Asia; and through more than 43,000 kilometers (27,000 miles) of optical fibre network, which TeliaSonera International Carrier owns and operates. The Media Connect Occasional Use service offers broadcasters and service providers the option to reserve the Media Connect service for short duration broadcast events.

Paul Dahlgren, Vice President and Head of Product & Business Management, TeliaSonera International Carrier adds: “Following a competitive pitch against a number of fibre and satellite suppliers, this win is testament to our skilled team and successful technology service - TeliaSonera International Carrier was one of the first network operators with its own fiber-based media network to offer Occasional Use internationally. We are excited to be working with NEXION and look forward to growing our relationship with them and their broadcast customers. We are already in discussion regarding future collaborations on other major sports, news and entertainment events.”

In 2009, Wimbledon was watched by an estimated global cumulative audience across 182 territories of 378.8 million people.
