24 June 2013, LTE WORLD SUMMIT, AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC) and iBasis, a KPN company, today announced an LTE Roaming peering agreement that will ensure interoperability and a consistent user experience for roaming LTE subscribers.

The companies will interconnect their Diameter signaling and data hubs to enable LTE Roaming. They will also migrate all legacy services to the new IPX interconnect to provide GSMA-standard IPX features such as end-to-end Quality of Service, Security, Multilateral Connectivity and Cascading Payments.

TeliaSonera was the first to introduce LTE roaming in February 2013 and its TSIC division launched the 200+ point of presence TeliaSonera IPX network in May. The TeliaSonera IPX network is built upon TSICs wholly-owned and fully redundant optical network, recently 100G-enabled.

"As soon as users experience higher quality, they demand it. There will be no going back and we see a growing user requirement to do everything on their mobile devices from anywhere they want – in short, ‘anywhereization’. ” said Erik Hallberg, President, TeliaSonera International Carrier, “We are pleased to work with iBasis, who are of a like-mind to help Mobile Operators achieve LTE Roaming interoperability.”

“iBasis also has a long and successful track record of critical, real-time services such as Voice and Signaling, which, along with GRX and LTE Roaming are part of a full portfolio of services available over our multiservice IPX,” said Willem Offerhaus, President and CEO of iBasis. “Teliasonera International Carrier is a valuable partner and, like iBasis, an innovator with a history of success delivering real-time services via IP. As more and more operators implement LTE and recognize the challenges of LTE Roaming, agreements like this encourage more of them to take the next step in transforming international services.”

As part of the iBasis IPX, the LTE Signaling eXchange (LSX) service provides a single point of access to the international 4G Diameter signaling network, complemented with 2G and 3G MAP Signaling interworking services to non-LTE networks. The LSX ensures that TSIC’s LTE customers receive best-in-class connectivity worldwide and access to a global footprint of LTE operator networks. iBasis operates a live 4G (LTE) signaling network with Diameter Routing Agents in key locations around the world. In addition, iBasis offers a trial environment for testing LTE interworking and roaming scenarios.

“This is a significant event between two heavy weight LTE roaming players”, says Simon Sherrington, Managing Director, Innovation Observatory, “IPX market growth will be delivered by LTE roaming and interoperability services, voice services (including VoLTE), high-quality international data services, rich media and advanced telephony services. We can expect to see new value-added services designed to make service provision more efficient and which help operators identify potential customers.”
