Broadband built-out inaugurated in Markaryd

Virtually all residents of the Municipality of Markaryd will be able to order broadband service just in time for Sweden’s traditional Lucia celebrations on December 13 today. In June this year, the municipality signed a contract with TeliaSonera Sweden for a supplementary build-out of the municipal broadband network that was inaugurated today.

Up to now about 90 percent of the residents in the Municipality of Markaryd have had access to TeliaSonera’s broadband network. After the network build-out, 98 percent now have access to broadband service. Markaryd has chosen an open solution in which the municipal broadband network is operator-independent. Depending on their connection, proximity to a telecom exchange and choice of operator, residents in the Municipality of Markaryd can order broadband with speeds ranging from 250 Kbit/s to 24 Mbit/s. Companies requiring additional bandwidth can connect to a core network linking towns and communities in the municipality and providing much higher transmission speeds. “The broadband build-out in Markaryd has been eagerly awaited. It will provide new opportunities for private persons and enterprises in the area. Now it won’t make any difference where you live or work in the municipality – everyone has equal access to broadband service,” says Bengt Germundsson, chairman of the executive board for the Municipality of Markaryd. In the agreement with TeliaSonera Sweden, all telecom exchanges in the Municipality of Markaryd have been upgraded for ADSL capacity. Using fibre optics and radio links, broadband service is basically available to all companies and households in the municipality. “To everyone’s delight, the build-out in Markaryd was finished more than three months before the agreed delivery date and I think many will order broadband as a Christmas present for their families this year,” says Monica Björk, acting head of TeliaSonera Network Sales. During the past few years TeliaSonera has signed agreements for building out broadband networks with close to 90 municipalities in Sweden.
