The build-out of a new municipality-wide broadband network is now finished in Herrljunga, in southwest Sweden. The network, provided by TeliaSonera Network Sales, was officially inaugurated by the Municipality of Herrljunga on Wednesday, December 1. Approximately 99 percent of the municipality’s residents now have access to broadband service, of which 60 percent can have speeds up to 8 Mbit/s.

Residents in the municipality are now free to choose one of the operators that will provide broadband services to consumers and companies through the new network. Depending on their choice of broadband provider, all households and companies located within a link distance of 3.5 km from a switching centre will have broadband with speeds up to 8 Mbit/s. Those located within a link distance of 9 km can have broadband with speeds up to 500 Kbit/s. The network was officially inaugurated during an information meeting in Herrljunga that was attended by representatives of the municipality and TeliaSonera. “This is a welcome Christmas present for our municipality and we’re very pleased that we can offer broadband to such a high percentage of residents. It goes without saying that broadband is necessary for enabling positive growth for our municipality, and for other reasons like making Herrljunga an attractive area to move to,” says Margaretha Yngvesson, chairman of the Herrljunga municipal executive board. In June this year, the Municipality of Herrljunga signed an agreement with TeliaSonera for the build-out of a municipality-wide broadband network. Since June, telecom switching centres in the municipality have been upgraded for ADSL, which utilises copper cable in the existing telephone network and allows a very high broadband penetration rate, even in very rural areas. “With our ADSL technology, we have been able to provide the Municipality of Herrljunga with a fast and cost-effective broadband build-out. With our offering, we can also give municipalities a very high penetration rate, enabling the provision of broadband service even in sparsely populated areas,” says Susanne Jacobsson, head of TeliaSonera Network Sales. During the past year TeliaSonera has signed agreements to provide broadband networks to approximately 75 municipalities in Sweden, of which 18 in Västra Götaland County in south-western Sweden.
