TeliaSonera first to launch 4G in Finland
TeliaSonera today launched the first commercial 4G services in Finland. The services will be offered to customers in Turku and Helsinki.
“The explosive growth of mobile broadband shows that the demand for bandwidth is unlimited, and with 4G we can offer more speed and capacity for mobile data,” says Marek Hintze, Head of TeliaSonera’s Mobility Services in Finland. We have now been operating our 4G network for pilot customers in Turku for six months and the interest in 4G has steadily increased. Therefore we are very happy to launch commercially.
The 4G network is used for super-fast mobile data transmission with a laptop and a 4G modem. The next generation mobile network offers mobile broadband enabling high capacity services such as video, interactive tv and professional and business services.
Besides Finland’s first 4G networks in Turku, the services start with initial 4G coverage in the business centre area north of Helsinki. The network operates in the 2.6 GHz frequency band.
“4G services will expand significantly in Helsinki as soon as there are modems available for both frequencies. We are focusing on building 4G in the 1.8 GHz frequency, because this way we can build wider coverage for our customers’ benefit,“ says Marek Hintze.
The price for Sonera’s 4G service “Sonera Full Net 4G” is €46/month, including a 4G modem that supports also 3G and 2G.

TeliaSonera was the first operator in the world to launch 4G commercially in Stockholm and Oslo in December 2009.
TeliaSonera introduced the first 4G connection in Finland in December 2009 and launched first 4G services for pre-commercial use in Turku on June 2, 2010. The initial 4G coverage in Helsinki is in the business centre area Alppila-Vallila-Itä-Pasila, about 3 km north of Helsinki city centre.
4G offers fast mobile broadband service in the mobile network. 4G is based on the mobile LTE standard. The theoretical maximum speed of 4G is 100 Mbit/s. In normal circumstances, the speed is 20-80 Mbit/s. In Finland, 4G can be built on two frequencies, 1.8 GHz and 2.6 GHz. In the first phase, only modems for the 2.6 GHz are available. Multi-mode modems for both 4G frequencies are expected on the market during next spring.
TeliaSonera has not yet decided suppliers for the national 4G network rollout in Finland. The initial radio network 4G is supplied by Ericsson in Turku and by Nokia Siemens Networks in Helsinki. Ericsson supplies TeliaSonera’s 4G core network in the Nordic and Baltic countries.
The 4G modems that Sonera uses in Finland are supplied by Samsung. It is a USB dongle supporting 4G/3G/2G.
In Finland, TeliaSonera’s services are market under the Sonera brand.
