TeliaSonera invests in more nationwide frequencies in the 1800 MHz band on the Swedish market. This became clear today when the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) announced the result of the licence auction. The new frequencies will be used for the ongoing build-out of Sweden’s largest 4G network and for strengthening the nationwide mobile telephony network.

TeliaSonera is already using part of the 1800 MHz band in Sweden for nationwide mobile telephony services in the 2G network. The new frequencies will provide customers with even more bandwidth for their surf needs in the 4G network at the same time that the nationwide mobile telephony network is strengthened.

In addition to the existing 10 MHz, TeliaSonera now also has the acquired 2x25 MHz in the 1800 MHz frequency band. The licences granted now for the 1800 MHz band are valid for 25 years starting from 2013, and the costs for the new frequency blocks in total are SEK 920 million. The payment to PTS will be made during the fourth quarter of 2011.

The frequency blocks now acquired in the 1800 MHz frequency band are not subject to any conditions related to construction pace or population coverage in Sweden.

TeliaSonera already uses the 1800 MHz frequency band for 4G services in Finland, Denmark, Latvia and Lithuania. During summer 2011, TeliaSonera’s subsidiary Yoigo also acquired frequencies in the 1800 MHz band to be used for 4G services in Spain.
