TeliaSonera´s 4G in Estonia – best in Europe
TeliaSonera’s subsidiary EMT in Estonia won on 29 May, 2013 a spectrum beauty contest for the 800 MHz band, enabling faster 4G coverage over wide and rural areas. Two weeks later the 4G network is ready to use and has a territorial coverage of over 95%. The best coverage in Europe.
In 2010, EMT was the first operator in Estonia to launch a 4G network, based on the LTE technology. On 29 May, 2013, EMT won the spectrum beauty contest for the 800 MHz band, enabling faster 4G coverage over wide and rural areas, and started a very ambitious build-out with of 4G. At 16 June , approximately two weeks later, the 4G build-out is ready and covers over 95% territorial area in Estonia, which is the best area coverage in Europe.
“Without the spectrum in 800 MHz it would take years to cover the 95% of the land area. By securing the 800 MHz spectrum, we were able to do it in two weeks,” said Tommy Ljunggren, Head of System Development at TeliaSonera Mobility Services. “We are proud to be leading in all our markets to offer 4G services for much faster mobile surfing; and especially proud for the land area coverage in Estonia, “ends Tommy Ljunggren.
In April, the Estonian Technical Surveillance Authority measured service quality of mobile data in large cities and towns across Estonia. The objective was to give consumers objective information on coverage and data speeds. The test showed that EMT’s network offers by far the fastest speeds of all Estonian wireless networks. The 4G services offered by EMT can be used with modems, tablets and smartphones. EMT is currently the only Estonian carrier that offers 4G for phones.
