TeliaSonera´s subsidiary Kcell launches GPRS and MMS services in Kazakhstan The mobile operator GSM Kazakhstan with the brand name Kcell, in which TeliaSonera´s subsidiary Fintur Holdings holds a majority share, has introduced the first mobile internet and multimedia messaging services in the Eurasian markets of Fintur. With these advanced services Kcell sets a new high-quality level of mobile communication in Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is Fintur´s largest market, counting 47 percent of Fintur´s revenues during 2002. Kazakhstan represents the strong growth potential of TeliaSonera's Eurasian markets with a mobile penetration of about 8 percent compared to the total population of 14.9 million. Kcell is the leading mobile operator in Kazakhstan with a market share of 70 percent. Kcell's subscriber growth during the first half of this year was 18 percent, and at the end of June the company had 723,000 subscribers. TeliaSonera consolidates GSM Kazakhstan as a subsidiary with a 51 percent ownership via TeliaSonera´s Fintur operations. Kcell's Mobile Internet is a GPRS-based service that allows an on-line connection to the Internet via a mobile phone. The service is available at any time, in any place covered by Kcell's network. The implementation of GPRS is a significant step in the modernization of the company's GSM network towards 3G. The use of GPRS technology also makes it considerably easier to access WAP services. On Kcell's WAP site one can find various informative sections, polyphonic melodies and pictures. Another new service - MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) allows sending photographs and video clips accompanied by music via a mobile phone.
