TeliaSonera to test future telephony – mobile and IP telephony integrated into a single telephone

Report this content

TeliaSonera starts tests in Denmark with a new concept where mobile telephony is integrated with IP telephony at home. This is part of TeliaSonera’s ambition to lead the migration from fixed to mobile and Internet-based services. The aim with the tests is to gradually provide an integrated mobile and IP-based telephony solution where the customer only needs a single wireless phone for all of his or her telephone needs. The phone will serve as an IP phone within the four walls of home. When the customer leaves home, the phone will automatically switch over to the mobile network. - At present, the most powerful trend on the telecommunications market is the migration from fixed to mobile and Internet-based services. It is the customers who are driving the development, they want to have solutions combining mobile communications with fixed telephony and broadband at home. For this reason, it is important for us to set out rapidly and test new alternatives for future telephony, says Kennet Rådne, Senior Vice President, Products & Services, TeliaSonera AB. TeliaSonera’s Danish operations will be the first to test an integrated mobile telephony and IP telephony service. The tests in Denmark will be based on the international standard UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access), which makes it possible for a mobile phone to communicate over the Internet via Bluetooth or WLAN. This will be tested and evaluated during this year before a possible launch in 2006. TeliaSonera will also monitor and evaluate alternative technologies for integrated mobile telephony and IP telephony solutions. The possible launch on different markets depends on the availability of terminals and the general market conditions.
