Delivering Services via a Gateway in the Network A world unique solution for delivering services to the home is being tested in a residential section of Stockholm. Under the motto: "No New Boxes", instead of placing a residential gateway in each home, the service gateway is placed inside of the network. Telia has developed this Network Service Gateway based on the OSGi specification, which enables the network delivery of value-added, managed services and applications. Currently the Gateway is being used to enhance connection-oriented services i.e. measure service usage and make it possible for new e-commerce solutions based on service usage. -The solution of placing a Service Gateway in the network is both an economical and flexible way to produce distributed services, according to Claes Nycander, President at Telia Research. It provides both security and scaling advantages. The customer is provided with an easy method to subscribe to new services in his home. The field trial is a collaboration between Skanova and Telia Research testing Telia's future broadband infrastructure where the Service Gateway is an integral part of that new infrastructure. The OSGi platform in the trial is based on technologies from both Gatespace and Sun Microsystems.
