Telia awarded Danish UMTS licence The Danish Telecommunications Board today awarded Telia one of the four UMTS licences to be issued in Denmark. The positive announcement from the Danish Telecommunications Board means that Telia is one of four operators involved in building Denmark's UMTS network. The licence is an important step in Telia's Nordic strategy, and strengthens Telia's position as the Nordic region's leading mobile operator. Telia is already involved in the development of UMTS in Sweden, Norway and Finland. "We are delighted to be granted the licence, which is in line with our Nordic strategy. It gives us the opportunity to continue our strong growth in the Nordic mobile market. We will also be able to take advantage of a common Nordic platform when we are developing our new UMTS services", says Kenneth Karlberg, Senior Executive Vice President Telia AB and head of business area Mobile. In the mobile network of the future, Telia will focus on user needs, and the company is already working on developing the services, which the new technology makes possible. Telia's services will be customer-focused and will start from the basis of the customers' daily lives to make life easier for both private and business customers. Telia will begin the construction of the UMTS network in Denmark along with the terms of the licence. The network follows the development in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Telia has a leading position in mobile communications in the Nordic countries, and as sole operator can provide mobile services in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. Telia has more than 4.7 million customers in the Nordic countries.
