Telia International Carrier first with Scandinavian network ring Telia International Carrier's Scandinavian network, "Scandinavian Ring" is now ready to operate. The ring, which links up Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, has taken a year and a half to complete and makes Telia International Carrier the first carrier to connect the Scandinavian capitals with broadband. Initially Telia International Carrier has nine customers in the ring, all international telephone operators, with several other clients about to join. Break even point has already been reached and 20-year contracts secure long-term prosperity. The ring is open for voice operators and others who want to buy fibers, ducts or wavelengths. The Scandinavian Ring is part of Telia International Carrier's global net, The Viking Network. The transmission technique used in this optical backbone is supplied by Lucent Technologies and is built around the DWDM function, i.e. the forwarding of information by the use of laser in different colors. - We believe in an open market and to make profit on the entire value chain. To be first with our own network on our market is essential for a leading carrier in Europe, says Lars Rydin, Telia International Carrier. - International transmission and supplying wavelengths is one of Telia's most important fields. And the fact that Lucent, a leading supplier within this business area, has the confidence to work together with Telia during the extremely quick construction of the Scandinavian Ring is very positive for us, says Hans Rundberg, CEO of Lucent Technologies, Sweden. Now the rest of Europe and the USA is left, even here Lucent is Telia's supplier. The Scandinavian Ring facilitates a quick establishment on the Scandinavian market for international operators. The Ring is a co- operation with Skanova which is Telia's newly established company for netservices in Sweden.
