Telia Mobile launches the Globalstar Satellite Service in Sweden Telia Mobile has closed an agreement with Globalstar Northern Europe for the Swedish market, giving its GSM customers mobile access even beyond the coverage of the GSM networks. Globalstar will be a valuable complement for people travelling and working in remote parts of the world and also for specific users groups within Sweden. Telia Mobiles customers can use a dual mode handset, operating in the GSM900 frequency band and switching to Globalstar satellite mode whenever required. A unique feature of the Globalstar service is the ability for customers to retain their existing Telia Mobile GSM number. The features of GSM - voicecalls, text messaging (SMS), voicemail and roaming - will still be available through Globalstar, along with additional services such as fax, data transmission services scheduled for a later introduction. Globalstar is an ideal solution for services as: emergency, media, aid and relief assistance, land transport fleet management, government workers, civil defense and the marine community. Together with Ericsson, who is a manufacturer of Globalstar Satellite telephones, Telia Mobile starts pre-operational trials during the "Gotland Runt" Baltic boat race, July 2-8. Commercial launch of Globalstar is scheduled to take place early september 2000.
