Telia/Telenor to enter the intelligent car area Future cars will be used for more than transportation. New cars are incresingly being installed with wireless communication systems. Security solutions are today among the most usual ones but information and communications services will soon also be of interest in cars. Telenor/Telia therefore plans to widen the company´s business within wireless communication to include communication solutions för the intelligent cars of the future. Telenor/Telia is building a unit within the company, Telenor/Telia Mobile AutoCom, which will develop the concept around the intelligent car. Solutions and services within voice, information, e-commerce, security and service will be developed together with partners. "There are many interesting business possibilities especially related to those connecting cars with the Internet", says Niclas Laurell, Project Leader for AutoCom at Telenor/Telia Mobile. Wireless communication solutions enabling future cars to become both transportation and communication units is a growing market. According to market forecasts the European market for information services related to cars is estimated to around 30 GSEK in year 2005. "Our ambition is to become the leading European supplier of wireless communication solutions for cars", says Lars Klasson, Director of Strategic Product & Concept Development at Telenor/Telia Mobile. The intelligent car concept is a further development of Telenor/Telia´s concentration in the mobile multimedia area. The company has already a longstanding competence within wireless communication solutions for vehicles for both public and private transportation companies in Sweden and other countries such as the Mobitex-system and solutions together with Telenor/Telia-owned ThorebITMobile AB. Machine-to-machine communication is another important area together with partly-owned Wireless Maingate AB.
