Augean North Sea Services Wins Environmental Award

Augean North Sea Services (ANSS) has set the standard in environmental best practice by becoming the first recipient of the Green Technology Award at the E-Reps Forum in Aberdeen.

The award recognised the specific contribution to environmental good practice available for the treatment of drilling waste mud from ANSS facility at Pocra Quay in Aberdeen. The main environmental benefits are:

  • ability for vessels to offload slops at quayside. This  removes the need for multiple vacuum tankers to operate alongside the boat for several hours, reducing associated CO2 emissions
  • volume of slops waste to be transported is reduced by water extraction for local discharge, again significantly reducing the carbon emissions associated.
  • vessels can also directly discharge dry bulks to the silo, removing the need for dry bulk tankers to attend vessels.

The unique Pocra Quay facility has been designed utilising the most up to date techniques for the treatment of drilling mud wastes (Slops). Obtaining waste treatment authorisation under PPC regulations in December 2009, the plant now receives slops / liquid drilling mud wastes directly from Platform Service Vessels (PSVs) into the facility for best in class treatment methods.

Treatment to enhance recovery is achieved by tank settlement, flocculation, mechanical centrifugation and media filtration to separate the phases of oil, water and solids prior to final recycling and/or disposal

The permit provides for the treatment of 25,000mt annually of oily slops wastes from offshore direct into the facility from PSVs and is the only quayside permitted slops treatment facility in the North East of Scotland.

Simon Gibb, managing director of ANSS commented on the specific reasons for receiving the award this year; ‘We feel that the award recognises the unique strengths of ANSS in the North Sea sector, to provide the ability for vessels to offload slops at the quayside, which removes the need for multiple vacuum tankers to operate alongside the boat for several hours, reducing associated CO2 emissions.’

‘The award also reflects that ANSS reduce the carbon emissions further, by using water extraction techniques for local discharge, to significantly reduce the overall volume of slops which are then transported. Finally ANSS have been recognised because  the vessels used can also directly discharge dry bulks to the silo, removing the need for dry bulk tankers to attend vessels. It is a great achievement for the team, and we are very proud that our services are being seen as the most environmentally friendly in the sector.’

E-Reps are individuals who have been nominated or volunteer to promote environmental awareness at the work face within the North Sea industry. The E-Reps Forum has become a significant venture to manage and increase the use of environmental best practice in the sector.

The award was presented by TV celebrity Dick Strawbridge of Scrapheap Challenge fame, and this year’s Forum and Awards attracted over 190 representatives and 20 exhibitors from across the UK with a vested interest in environmental best practice.
