Finnish Government approves extension of operating licences for OL1 and OL2 plant units
The Finnish Government has today approved the extension of the operating licences for the Olkiluoto 1 and 2 plant units of Teollisuuden Voima Oyj. The operation of the plant units can be continued up till the year 2038.
The Government decision was preceded by the statement of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) issued in May. According to STUK, the operation carried out by TVO is safe and in conformity with the law, and the Company has the required capabilities, procedures, expertise and resources for the safe continuation of the operation of the OL1 and OL2 plant units up till the year 2038.
- For TVO, the favourable decision means that electricity production will continue in Olkiluoto at OL1 and OL2 plant units for at least next twenty years. The decision is welcome also in terms of climate friendly electricity production and Finnish self-sufficiency, says Ms. Marjo Mustonen, Senior Vice President in charge of Electricity Production at TVO.
At present, the OL1 and OL2 plant units cover one sixth of the electricity demand in Finland. After the completion of the OL3 plant unit, the electricity produced in Olkiluoto will account for ca. 30%. Nuclear electricity is not dependent on the weather. Together with renewable sources, nuclear power plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change.
The operating licence application and the related requests for comments and opinions can be found (in Finnish) in full on the website of the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment at https://tem.fi/olkiluoto-1-ja-2-kayttolupa

Teollisuuden Voima Oyj has produced electricity for its shareholders, Finnish industrial and energy companies, safely and reliably for 40 years. Nuclear electricity generated at TVO's Olkiluoto plant covers approximately one sixth, increasing to nearly one third once Olkiluoto 3 is completed, of the electricity consumption in Finland. Climate-friendly nuclear electricity not only benefits society but also reduces the environmental impact of energy production. Moreover, the world's first final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel is under construction in Olkiluoto.
