OL3 EPR’s electricity production starts in the first half of February
The OL3 EPR plant unit’s electricity production starts in the first half of February, instead of the previously estimated start at the end of January. Regular electricity production starts in June 2022, as informed earlier.
At the test production phase of a nuclear power plant, the plant unit and its safety systems are tested to verify that the plant operations comply with design. The commissioning tests also comprise planned reactor trips.
The main reason for the postponement of the start of OL3 EPR’s electricity production is an unplanned automatic trip, which occurred on 14 January. The causes leading to the automatic trip and corrective measures have now been dealt with, but they caused a delay in the test production programme. The test production programme is currently proceeding normally.
The production forecast for the test production phase can be followed online at www.tvo.fi/ol3forecast. An urgent market message will be released in Nordpool on any significant changes.
The OL3 EPR plant supplier consortium is constructing the plant unit under a fixed-price turnkey contract. The supplier consortium companies, AREVA GmbH, AREVA NP SAS, and Siemens AG, have joint and several liability for the contractual obligations until the end of the guarantee period of the plant unit.

Teollisuuden Voima Oyj has produced electricity for its shareholders, Finnish industrial and energy companies, safely and reliably for 40 years. Nuclear electricity generated at TVO's Olkiluoto plant covers approximately one sixth, increasing to nearly one third once Olkiluoto 3 EPR is completed, of the electricity consumption in Finland. Climate-friendly nuclear electricity not only benefits society but also reduces the environmental impact of energy production. Moreover, the world's first final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel is under construction in Olkiluoto.
