Posiva's Annual Report 2021 has been published

During 2021, Posiva's EKA project, comprising of the construction of an encapsulation plant and an underground final disposal facility for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel, has progressed as planned.

In May, the excavation of the first five actual deposition tunnels – which are accessed via the central tunnels – was started in ONKALO at a depth of approximately 430 metres. At the end of 2021, approximately half of the excavation work was completed. In December, the encapsulation plant reaching its rooftop height was celebrated. 

A significant event in terms of the project preparation was the submission of the operating licence application to the Government in December 2021. The safety case in the operating licence application summarised decades of work towards constructing a safe final disposal system at Olkiluoto.

The encapsulation plant and final disposal facility are moving from construction and the installation of building technology to the installation and commissioning stage of systems for the spent nuclear fuel encapsulation process. The next significant step in the EKA project is starting the trial run of final disposal in 2023.
