Eklund Foundation Announces 2023 Grant Recipients
The Eklund Foundation for Odontological Research and Education is pleased to announce the two projects receiving this year’s funding.
The Eklund Foundation now supports research projects in dentistry for the eight year running. The two chosen projects, which are to be conducted at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and at the Cardiff School of Dentistry, UK, will together receive funding amounting to approximately €275,500.
Joel Eklund, Chairman of the Board, Eklund Foundation, said, “We are delighted to support these highly relevant studies, they have the potential to add valuable knowledge within their respective fields. The well-merited research groups represent a broad competence with regards to different specialties within odontology as well as through cross-disciplinary collaboration.”
The Eklund family, owners of TePe Oral Hygiene products, created the Eklund Foundation to celebrate their long-standing relationship with the professional dental community. Since 2016, the foundation has distributed up to €250,000 annually, supporting odontological research worldwide. The Eklund Foundation has decided to award grants to the following projects:
Periodontitis and Its Relation to Coronary Artery Disease (PAROKRANK) – a case controls study with mechanistic and prospective analyses

Co-applicant: Anders Gustafsson, Professor Odontology, Karolinska institutet, Sweden
Lars Rydén, Senior Professor, Karolinska institutet, Unit of Cardiology, Department of medicine, Sweden
Funding: SEK 1 784 000, approximately €153,800
Motivation: “Studying the connection between Periodontitis and Coronary artery disease is very relevant, the results can have a great impact globally both within odontology and medicine. “
Picture Perfect: Evaluating the Validity and Patient Experience of Smartphone Intra-oral Photography for Remote Oral Health Assessment in Children: a Mixed Methods, Comparative Study
Main applicant: Nicola Innes, Head of Cardiff School of Dentistry, Professor and Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, UK
Co-applicant: Waraf Al-yaseen, Lecturer in Dental Hygiene and Therapy, Cardiff School of Dentistry, UK

Motivation: “Evaluating the validity and patient experience of using smart-phone technology for remote oral-health assessment, this study has the potential to positively influence the accessibility to oral health care for many people.”
