In the government’s response to Lord Heseltine’s report ‘no stone unturned in the pursuit of growth’, it has been recognised that trade associations are key to improve business performance and develop industrial policy. This has made the Modular and Portable Building association (MPBA) more determined than ever to raise more awareness and drive the modular and prefabricated building industry forward.

Since its formation in 1938, the MPBA has connected all sectors of the industry together by promoting and encouraging the use of temporary and modular buildings for use in the construction, education, healthcare and commercial sectors.

Different activities are carried out by dedicated council and committee members; who freely volunteer their time to create important documents such as technical and health and safety guidelines that are approved by appropriate regulating bodies.

Key strengths of the MPBA lie with:

  • Liaising with regulators to represent the needs of the industry to maintain the profile of both modular and prefabricated construction.
  • Developing relationships with relevant business services to provide members with a range of benefits and product opportunities.
  • Meetings, training courses and events to ensure best possible industry practices.

Jackie Maginnis, MPBA Chief Executive said “these events are great as they bring companies who are normally competing with one another together for the greater good of the industry”.

Maginnis continued to say, “It is very important that the industry has a credible trade association because of the rapidly changing industry. Membership with the MPBA as the recognised trade association for the industry sector will open the door to various opportunities and add significant value to companies”.

There are many upcoming projects for the MPBA such as:

  1. Creating guidance notes for the ‘use of temporary accommodation on construction sites’ for the Carbon Trust Forum.
  2. The launch of the ‘Up-skilling Programme’ for NVQ level 2 training.
  3. Researching and investigating of CS cards for management level of the industry sector.
  4. Writing a guidance document on Part L for Modular & Portable Buildings (2013 regulations).
