Super Shuttle fleets save 50-60 percent on fuel costs with propane autogas

Super Shuttle, an airport transportation service with franchises across the U.S., saves about 50-60 percent on fuel costs by operating vehicles on clean, domestically produced propane autogas. Super Shuttle vehicle fleets in Phoenix, Ariz.; Denver and Fort Collins, Colo.; and Orlando, Fla. have been using the alternative fuel since 2009, while Super Shuttle Houston has been using autogas for 18 months.

Each Super Shuttle location uses propane dedicated Ford E-350 vans from ROUSH CleanTech; there are 160 vans nationwide and 30 at Super Shuttle Houston. The average Super Shuttle driver uses 10,000 gallons of propane annually. Super Shuttle leadership cites several reasons for the transition to propane autogas, including dramatic reductions in fuel costs for franchise owners and operators, significantly reduced harmful emissions compared to gasoline, and the national security benefits of reduced dependency on foreign oil.

“National vehicle fleets like Super Shuttle are leading the way in going green by choosing propane autogas,” said Jackie Mason, Education & Marketing Director for the Propane Council of Texas (ProCOT). “Propane autogas significantly reduces harmful emissions and greenhouse gases, making it a more environmentally conscious choice than gasoline or diesel.”

Propane autogas is widely available in Texas, with more than 700 refueling stations across the state. Super Shuttle Houston chooses to refuel at public stations near the airport, but other Super Shuttle franchises have installed on-site refueling stations at an affordable price. Super Shuttle isn’t the only fleet to recognize the benefits of propane autogas. Across the globe, more than 21 million vehicles run on propane autogas, and here in Texas, private businesses, municipalities, and more than 75 independent school districts operate vehicles, mowers and off-road equipment on the alternative fuel.

The Propane Council of Texas (ProCOT) created the Super Shuttle case study as part of its Propane Autogas: Fueling Texas campaign. The public awareness campaign has traveled across the state and produced a wide range of educational materials to promote the benefits of running vehicles and mowers on clean-burning propane autogas.
