The British Horse Society South West is the first region to reach the milestone target of 10,000 members. Miss Kelly Louise Davies, from Holsworthy in Devon, was the 10,000th person to join the Society.

When nine-year-old Kelly joined The British Horse Society little did she know that she would be the person who took the Society’s membership in the South West to its record breaking number. BHS Regional Development Officer Julie Garbutt, along with South West Regional Chairman Jennifer Ham and Regional Chairman (Emeritus) Robert Sullivan-Tailyour, visited Kelly to present her with a certificate to mark the occasion.

Kelly doesn’t own her own pony, but her mum Julie is a volunteer at a local riding stables owned by Daphne Southgate. Daphne has a palomino pony called ‘Pickles’, whom Kelly rides. At the beginning of July, Kelly went to her first show and came away with a handful of rosettes including two first prizes, one for Fancy Dress and one for the Mountain and Moorland class. Daphne, who is also a long standing member of the BHS, said: “As Kelly was going to start competing I wanted her to join the Society so that she benefited from the insurance cover. We certainly didn’t realise it was going to result in a visit to our yard and this lovely presentation”.

Kelly said she was very excited and shocked when she heard the news and explained that she had spent hours getting Pickles ready for his big day.

Julie Garbutt added: “The BHS in the South West has been working hard towards achieving 10,000 members and we are delighted that so many people are part of this great organisation. It has been an absolute delight to make this presentation to Kelly today and we hope that many more horse owners and riders will choose to make the BHS the charity they support, so that our work on behalf of horses and riders everywhere may continue to grow”.
