CABLE MAVERICKS® CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF CONNECTING STUDENTS AND CABLE TELECOMMUNICATIONS
DENVER – The Cable Center’s Cable Mavericks® Lecture Series is celebrating its fifth anniversary this October. Through the Cable Mavericks program, The Cable Center has reached nearly 5,000 students, changing their perceptions of the cable telecommunications industry and connecting them to industry leaders.
The first Cable Mavericks program took place at Fordham University and featured executives Susan Packard, then of Scripps Networks, and Chad Youngblood, then of HGTV. Since that first lecture, 41 more have taken place, with 38 executives representing 27 industry businesses and organizations and visiting 31 campuses across the United States.
This fall, three lectures are scheduled. On September 28, Alan Gerry, chairman and chief executive officer, Granite Associates LP, visited Syracuse University. On November 15, Kyle McSlarrow, president and CEO of the National Cable Telecommunications Association (NCTA), will speak at the University of Virginia School of Law. Finally, Quentin Schaffer, executive vice president, corporate communications for HBO, will talk to students at The University of Texas at Austin on November 18.
“We are so proud to be celebrating five years of Cable Mavericks,” said Christen Adams, manager of programs and education at The Cable Center. “We are thankful to all of the industry leaders who have given their time and energy over the years to help us connect students to the industry as they start their careers, and we look forward to many more successful Cable Maverick events in the future.”
The Cable Mavericks Lecture Series was developed by The Cable Center to serve as a direct channel in educating and encouraging students to explore careers in the cable telecommunications industry. The series is supported by a significant donation from the Motorola Foundation.
Over the years, feedback received by The Center has shown that 80 percent of students consider the cable industry a compelling career option after participating in a lecture. Out of that group, 90 percent had not previously thought about the industry as a possibility.
