DENVER – The Cable Center’s Cable Mavericks® Lecture Series, now in its fifth year of connecting students and cable, is adding a new program component that will give students a chance to hear from multiple speakers in one location and to interview for jobs and internships in the industry.

The new addition to the series will be called Cable Mavericks Masters Forum: One Day Degree in Cable, and will be held at the Paley Center for Media in New York on October 28, 2011. In addition to targeting students in the immediate area, The Cable Center will also make the program available for live streaming for students around the country and world, and for on demand playback after the event is complete. All of the programming and content will be provided at no charge to the students.

In addition to the conventional lecture and discussion that makes up a typical Cable Mavericks day, the One Day Degree program will also include two student competitions: one focused on the development of new technology, and one focused on media content.

“We have seen how hearing directly from cable executives motivates students about working in the industry—more than 80 percent tell us they want a career in the industry after a lecture,” said Dolly Wolf, director of programs and education for The Cable Center. “We’re really excited about how the One Day Degree program will greatly expand the reach of the Cable Mavericks Lecture Series, and therefore the reach of the industry in the nation’s top schools.”

The speaker line up for the One Day Degree will be a robust group of programmers, operators, and other executives who work in or have been impacted by cable telecommunications. Already signed up to speak are Nomi Bergman, Bright House Networks; Joan Gillman and Peter Stern of Time Warner Cable; and Steve Scully, C-SPAN. Additional speakers will be announced later this year.

Evan Shapiro, president of IFC and Sundance Channel, and popular Cable Mavericks speaker, is chairing the committee that is overseeing planning for the program.  “Cable Mavericks has been such a wonderful experience over the past few years for those of us lucky enough to participate. My hope is that the Cable Mavericks Masters Forum expands our reach to students across the country, and makes connections for them throughout the industry,” said Shapiro.

Other committee members include Christine Bragan, Rainbow Media Holdings LLC; Connie Ciliberti, Time Warner Cable; Liz Seidner Davidoff, Motorola Mobility, Inc.; Zenita Henderson, Motorola Mobility, Inc.; Stephen Kimmerling, The New School; Brandon Maultasch, IFC, and Jonathan Ruff, Motorola Mobility, Inc.

The Cable Mavericks Lecture Series was developed by The Cable Center five years ago to serve as a direct channel in educating and encouraging students to explore careers in the cable telecommunications industry, and since then has reached thousands of students across the nation.  The series is supported by a significant donation from the Motorola Foundation.

“Motorola Mobility strongly believes in supporting educational programs that inspire students to embrace science, technology and engineering. We believe that Cable Mavericks accomplishes this goal, and we are proud to be multi-year supporters of the program and The Cable Center,” said Eileen Sweeney, director of the Motorola Mobility Foundation.
