Head of US Pacific Command in Chicago to Discuss Rebalance toward Asia
November 7 CHICAGO - Admiral Samuel J. Locklear, Commander of U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM), is in Chicago today to discuss the recalibration of U.S. national security strategy to emphasize the Asia-Pacific. He will speak at an event hosted by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs this evening. The event is open to the public and takes place at 6:00 p.m. at the InterContinental Chicago, 505 N. Michigan Avenue.
PACOM’s area of responsibility encompasses approximately half of the world’s surface and more than half of its population. The Asia-Pacific region is a vital driver of the global economy, with the world's busiest international sea lanes and nine of the ten largest ports. The region is also the most militarized in the world, with seven of the world's ten largest standing militaries and five of the world's declared nuclear nations.
Admiral Locklear will address long term security threats in the Pacific, including escalating tensions between China and Japan, a spike in computer attacks originating in China, provocative and hostile actions by North Korea and issues arising from a changing climate. His talk is part of The Chicago Council’s Chicago and the World Forum series “The Asian Century?”
Admiral Locklear’s previous command assignments include commander of USS Leftwich, Destroyer Squadron TWO, NIMITZ Strike Group, US THIRD Fleet, and of US Naval Forces Europe, US Naval Forces Africa, and Allied Joint Force Command Naples. Ashore, he served as executive assistant to the vice chief of naval operations, the 78th commandant of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy, director of the assessment division, director of the programming division, and as director of navy staff. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and holds a master’s degree from the George Washington University.
