TV DOCTOR CHRISTIAN JESSEN AND MP SHARON HODGSON ARE CALLING ON PEOPLE ACROSS THE UK TO MAKE TIME FOR TEA TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE EVE APPEAL
March 2015 is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and TV’s doctor, Christian Jessen and MP Sharon Hodgson are calling on people to Make Time For Tea to raise money for cancer research charity, The Eve Appeal.
In March, The Eve Appeal asks people across the UK to hold tea parties with a view to raising money and awareness. Every year in the UK over 7,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 4,200 women lose their fight. Each cup of tea poured and every cake baked and enjoyed can help change that statistic.
Dr Christian Jessen, UK doctor and TV presenter says “Survival rates for ovarian cancer have barely changed in the last 30 years. The Eve Appeal is raising awareness of signs and symptoms of the disease, alongside raising funds for vital research into risk prediction and earlier detection – because that’s what will save lives. Please support this important work by Making Time Tor Tea with friends and family and help to spread the word and support medical research into this too-little known cancer.
This is the only time a doctor is going to recommend cake to you, so make the most of it!"
Sharon Hodgson, Labour MP for Washington and Sunderland West and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ovarian Cancer, will be hosting a tea party in the House of Commons in March. She says: “For many years, I have campaigned on behalf of the 4200 women who die each year from ovarian cancer. I urge everyone to join me and Make Time For Tea to support The Eve Appeal’s campaign. Holding a tea party with friends or colleagues is great fun - and really will make a difference to women’s lives”.
Athena Lamnisos, Chief Executive of The Eve Appeal says: “Last year, 177 tea parties were held raising nearly £53,000. Let’s try and beat that in 2015. The world-leading research that we fund is ambitious and challenging but our vision is simple - a future where fewer women develop and significantly more women survive gynaecological cancers.”
Everyone who signs up to Make Time For Tea will get a free fundraising pack which will give them everything they need to hold the perfect tea party. All people need to do is visit www.eveappeal.org.uk/tea or call 020 7605 0100.

About The Eve Appeal
The Eve Appeal is the only UK national charity raising awareness and funding research in the five gynaecological cancers – ovarian, womb, cervical, vaginal and vulval. It was set up to save women’s lives by funding groundbreaking research focused on developing effective methods of risk prediction, earlier detection and developing screening for these women-only cancers. The charity has grown and developed in parallel with its core research team, the Department of Women’s Cancer at University College London (UCL), and has played a crucial role in providing seed funding, core infrastructure funding and project funding in addition to campaigning to raise awareness of women-specific cancers.
Ovarian Cancer Symptoms
There are early signs to look out for with ovarian cancer. These include:
- Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain
- Increased abdominal size/persistent bloating – not bloating that comes and goes
- Difficulty eating and feeling full quickly
- Urinary symptoms - needing to pass water urgently or more often than usual
If any of the above three symptoms occur frequently, ie more than 12 times a month, this can suggest ovarian cancer and medical advice should be sorted.
