Livermore, CA – USA – January 30, 2014 – The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation today announced that its YouTube Channel is now published at http://www.youtube.com/user/hertzfoundation. This searchable, curated gallery features scientists and engineers who are impacting physics, chemistry, robotics, medicine, bioinformatics, energy capture/storage, mathematics, asteroid management, and many more disciplines in science and engineering. Featured videos include reflections on the phenomenal Hertz Fellows Community; the impact of one’s investment; and why individuals render service to the Foundation.

“We’re pleased to debut this Channel,” said Hertz Foundation president, Jay Davis, “and we’re proud to have produced such a library of intriguing films. These beautifully produced narratives and personal interviews tell the Hertz story in a way that no other medium can. Video capture is the next best thing to seeing in person the enthusiasm and creative drive that differentiates a Hertz Fellow.”

A right vertical column exhibits links to other select channels such as academic institutions like Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Stonybrook. Channels as diverse as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Science Friday, TED Talks and the James Webb Telescope are featured. “We’re in good company, linked with these distinguished organizations,” continued Davis. “Hertz Fellow John Mather is the Nobel Laureate now working on the James Webb Telescope. We’re pleased to have them – and NASA – on our Channel.”

As with all YouTube channels, a featured video starts playing when the channel opens. That highlight reflects on events of the Foundation’s 50thAnniversary Year. Six playlist rows have sliding horizontal thumbnails. When a video is finished playing, a subsequent video automatically starts. Playlists include:

  • “2013 Hertz  Fellows” –  Fellows chosen in March 2013
  • “The Hertz Foundation – Freedom to Innovate” – General and Community Videos
  • “Events and Music” – Hertz Fellows Community in Collective Performance and Celebration
  • “Jay Davis with Background of the Hertz Foundation” – History, Investing, Selection Process
  • “Hertz Foundation Board of Directors” – Reflections on Rendering Service
  • “In School and Graduate Fellows” – Interviews and Reflections

Videos illustrate why the Hertz Fellowship is considered to be the nation’s most  prestigious. Valued at a quarter million dollars it is also the most generous support for graduate education in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences. Fellows have the freedom to innovate in their doctoral studies without most traditional research funding restrictions.

During the past decade, there has been a major shift of the Hertz Foundation to support the building of the vibrant Hertz Fellows Community. They gather regularly to inspire one another and collaborate across generations and disciplines for innovation that further augments the power of their contribution.

For more than half a century, the Hertz Foundation has fostered the scientific and engineering strength of the nation by finding the best and brightest graduate students from those disciplines. Hertz Fellows pursue the PhD with their own ideas and with complete financial independence, under the guidance of some of the country’s finest professors and mentors. Fellows are chosen for their intellect, their ingenuity and their potential to bring meaningful improvement to society. The highly competitive selection process includes a comprehensive written application, four references, and two rounds of technical interviews by recognized leaders in applied sciences and engineering. During the past decade of applications, there has been a major shift of the candidates towards those who apply physical and computational tools to the problems of biomedicine and health. Significantly, another shift of the Hertz Foundation has been to support Hertz Fellows to build the vibrant Hertz Fellows Community. All ages gather in annual workshops and retreats to inspire one another and collaborate across generations and disciplines for innovation that further augments their powerful contribution.
