Jarrow Hall reopened after it’s Winter break on February 18th. This year we have lots of exciting things in store making it a great place to visit for families.

As part of World Book Weekend, starting on Thursday 2nd March to Sunday March 5th, you can go undercover and test your detective skills at Jarrow Hall as part of the national Montgomery Bonbon: Museum Mystery Trail, organised by Kids in Museums and Walker Books. The trail celebrates the release of new children’s book Montgomery Bonbon: Murder at the Museum written by comedian Alasdair Beckett-King and illustrated by Claire Powell.

Home to one of the biggest libraries of its time, Jarrow has always had a love of books. Join us for a weekend of fun and reading with lots of “novel” things to do.

Visit the Kids in Museums website to find out how you could win a signed copy of the book and your very own detective kit!

“We are delighted to have so much to do this Spring at Jarrow Hall. We have a lots of new things to see and do such as artefacts never displayed before and interactive fun in our latest temporary exhibition, our exciting detective trail with Montogomery BonBon, even a Lego play table in the museum if our Saxon structures have given you the building bug!“

Over World Book Weekend, we have a FREE craft stall and lots of sessions for children to enjoy with group sizes kept small to encourage lots of hands on fun or space around the fire!

Seek out Cheshire Cat in the Thirlings Hall and hear magical and farfetched tales from long ago. Come along in your World Book Day Costume and get your photo taken with our magnificent Codex.

Other Things To Do

Anglo-Saxon farm and village

Discover Jarrow’s own open air, living history museum, across our Anglo-Saxon village and farm, delve into Anglo-Saxon life during the time of Bede. Learn about the animal residents of “Gyrwhe” and discover the primitive, rare breed and rescued animals that would have been present in Anglo-Saxon Northumbria.

Museum Collections

The museum was originally set up to care for and display nationally and internationally significant material from the site of the Jarrow Monastery, founded by Benedict Biscop in 681 AD; one half of the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow.

Jarrow Hall also cares for a small social history collection relating to both Jarrow Hall House, our Grade II listed Georgian House, as well as some local Jarrow history. The Georgian House was built around 1785 by local coal mine and shipbuilding industrialist Simon Temple.
