Attention to Blood Sugar Levels Seen As Key to Successful Weight Loss

Excess blood sugar is converted to body fat via the hormone insulin.  For any fat-loss efforts to be successful, blood sugar levels must be addressed and controlled.

A recent survey by the Calorie Control Council found that only 8% of Americans follow restrictive diets like Atkins or Dukan, or weight control programs like Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. Instead, the most popular weight control methods involved cutting back on sugar, eating smaller portions, using low-calorie, sugar-free foods and beverages, and combining calorie reduction with exercise. The survey also found that 54% of Americans are trying to lose weight. With so many options, why are so few successful?

“Our bodies are very sensitive to fluctuations in blood sugar,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). “Excess blood sugar is converted to body fat via the hormone insulin. For any fat-loss efforts to be successful, blood sugar levels must be addressed and controlled. The constant presence of excess blood sugar and resulting insulin spikes are the leading cause of diabetes, insulin resistance and other serious metabolic disorders.”

“Sugar and all its variations, refined and processed foods, especially sugar/fat/salt combinations, and grain consumption are the cause of abnormal blood sugar spikes and to a lesser extent, large combination meals,” adds Dian Griesel. “This is where anyone serious about losing their excess fat needs to address their attention.”

“Humans evolved on a diet of fruits, vegetables, tubers, nuts, seeds and animal protein whenever they could get it,” says Tom Griesel. “None of these natural foods will result in excess blood sugar levels when consumed in reasonable amounts and in proper combination. Excess weight and especially excess body fat, can be shed rather quickly and painlessly by working with your body instead of against it. This, along with appropriate activities and activity levels, is the ‘Master Key’ to lean bodies and optimal health.”
