Choosing what to eat is the biggest challenge for anyone trying to get into shape.  Boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel have amassed practical advice from 30 years of research and continuous experimentation, and share many of these tips in their new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH),

“Think you’re hungry?  Have a big drink of water first!” says Dian.  “And if you are thirsty, drink water instead of a sports drink.  If you’re a coffee drinker, have a cup black or with half and half, and skip the sugar and sugary syrups.”

“If you’re in the mood for a snack, skip the 100 calories of cookies, and instead eat one or two pieces of any fruit you want,” adds Tom.  “For lunch, skip the sandwich and opt for a huge salad; load it up with an assortment of vegetables.  Then add a big scoop of avocado, and if desired, a squeeze of lemon for a healthful, nutritious and creamy dressing.  And for dinner, skip the pasta and have a steak and salad instead.  The carbohydrates in the pasta will make you want to binge later in the evening when you need to sleep but you are still trying to get kids to bed, work done or whatever.”

Instead of ice cream, peel a few ripe bananas (those with brown spots), place them in a plastic bag and freeze for 10-12 hours, say the Griesels; then take one out and enjoy it as an ice cream pop.

“Remember,” says Dian, “nothing tastes as good as thin feels.  So before you eat, promise yourself that you will take from 30 seconds to 1 minute to close your eyes and visualize your goal.”
