Could Gardening Trigger Diabetes?

A recent study reported in the journal Diabetes Care found people with relatively high levels of certain pesticides in their blood may have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, particularly if they are overweight.  Research has suggested that some of these pollutants impair the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, which may explain the link to type 2 diabetes.

According to Riikka Airaksinen of Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare, who led the study, these pollutants along with body fat “may have a synergistic effect on the risk of type 2 diabetes.”

“Organic pollutants and other toxic compounds, including ones that have now been banned, remain in the environment for years—and when ingested from the air, water or food supply, build up in animal and human body fat,” says boomer generation health expert Dian Griesel, Ph.D., who with her brother Tom Griesel is the author of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

“These compounds come not only from pesticides and herbicides but also from man-made chemicals and dyes commonly used in refined processed food and beverage products,” says Dian.  “Storing these toxins in body fat may be a built-in protective mechanism.  A chemical that kills insects or weeds is not likely to be good for animals or humans.  We need much better safety testing for all substances that are used in our food supply as well as for pest and weed control.”

It is most important to eat the highest-quality foods that you can obtain and afford, says Tom.  “What you breathe, drink and eat has the greatest effect on your current and future health than any other factor under your control.  Your optimal health depends on it.”
