Environmental Health Trust Urges U.S. Federal Government to Help Implement Cell Phone Safety Measures

Call For Action Made in Light of World Health Organization’s Recent Declaration that Cell Phone Radiation May Cause Cancer in Humans

Following the World Health Organization’s recent declaration that cell phone radiation is a possible cause of cancer in humans, Environmental Health Trust (EHT) is calling on the US Federal Government to follow the lead of several other nations, to take steps to promote preventive actions to protect Americans, especially children from unwitting and unnecessary exposure to cell phones and other microwave-emitting devices.

EHT is requesting that the U.S. Federal Government to put into place the following measures as quickly as possible:

• Require the Federal Communications Commission to review existing standards for cell phones in light of the World Health Organization’s evaluation and adopt state-of-the-art approaches for their implementation.

• Mandate that all cell phones be sold with headsets and replace the current small print in brochures with highly visible advice about simple ways to avoid close contact with the brain and other parts of the body, especially for pregnant women and men who wish to become fathers.

• Order the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a national survey of institutional exposures to microwave radiation from cell phones and other devices.  The last such survey was conducted in 1980.

• Call for an immediate ban on all advertisements of cell phones featuring young children and promoting their use of these devices.

“There is mounting evidence that cell phone radiation can damage DNA, degrade the brain’s defenses, and reduce sperm counts while increasing memory loss and the risks of  cancer,” says Dr. Devra Davis, EHT President and author of Disconnect: The Truth about Cell Phone Radiation, What Industry Has Done to Hide It and How to Protect Your Family (Dutton, 2010).  “To the telecom industry executives of America, we say:  In light of the mounting evidence that formed the basis of the WHO finding, we urge you to join us as we work together to eliminate this potentially serious health issue faced by cell phone users in America and around the world, while still maintaining the extraordinary positive value of these devices.”

Dr. Davis adds, “Experience with known carcinogens has demonstrated that overall increases in cancer usually take twenty years or more after initial exposure. The world cannot afford to wait for an increase in brain cancers before taking steps to curb exposures to what is the largest uncontrolled experiment in the world--the use of cell phones by ourselves and our children."

Working with some of the world’s top scientists, EHT researches new health problems linked with cell phones; publicizes case reports on rare cell phone-associated illnesses; advocates the right to know about cell phone safety around the world; sponsors training programs for teachers and parents on reducing cell phone risks; and supports health professional training and education working at universities around the world. According to Lukas H. Margaritis, Professor Cell Biology and Radiobiology,  “DNA integrity, cell function and brain performance have been shown to be altered in lab animals by close mobile phone operation. In humans the latency period for cancer formation prevents direct evidence.”

A world-class Scientific Advisory Group complements EHT’s Board of Directors.  Working with governments, senior scientists and elected officials from Wyoming to Vienna, EHT helps devise policies to protect Americans’ right to information and, ultimately, their health.  Through YouTube, Twitter, longer blogs, and scientific symposia, EHT provides up-to-date information via e-newsletters, public events, conferences and its website www.ehtrust.org or www.saferphonezone.com.

About Environmental Health Trust

Environmental Health Trust (EHT) educates individuals, health professionals and communities about controllable environmental health risks and policy changes needed to reduce those risks. Current multi-media projects include: local and national campaigns to ban smoking and asbestos; working with international physician and worker safety groups to warn about the risks of inappropriate use of diagnostic radiation and cell phones, promoting research and awareness of environmental causes of breast cancer, and building environmental wellness programs in Wyoming and Pennsylvania to address the environmental impacts of energy development, the built environment and radon. EHT was created with the goal of promoting health and preventing disease one person, one community and one nation at a time. Capitalizing on growing public interest in Dr. Devra Lee Davis’s three popular books, When Smoke Ran Like Water, a National Book Award Finalist, The Secret History of the War on Cancer, and Disconnect--The Truth about Cell Phone Radiation, What Industry Has Done to Hide It and How to Protect Your Family, as well as recent documentary films, the foundation’s website offers clear, science-based information to prevent environmentally based disease and promote health, for the general public, children, and health professionals.
