Fresh Doubt Cast on the Benefits of Colon Cleansing

According to lead author Dr. Ranit Mishori of Georgetown University School of Medicine, there can be serious consequences for those who engage in colon cleansing whether they have the procedure done at a spa or perform it at home.

Are all the claimed health benefits of colon cleaning really true? In August 2010, HealthDay News, reporting on a review of 20 studies, found that the popular procedure has no health benefit. In fact, the researchers found it can cause serious side effects ranging from vomiting to kidney failure to death.

According to lead author Dr. Ranit Mishori of Georgetown University School of Medicine, “There can be serious consequences for those who engage in colon cleansing whether they have the procedure done at a spa or perform it at home. Colon cleansing products in the form of laxatives, teas, powders and capsules...tout benefits that don’t exist.”

“After consulting with several doctors who perform colonoscopies and seeing the pictures of squeaky clean colons (prepped with ordinary laxatives), we had our doubts,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

“The easiest way to ensure a healthy colon and optimal health is to avoid all refined and processed foods and consume a diet of fresh, natural and unprocessed fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and quality animal proteins,” says Tom. “The nutrients and fiber they contain will be all you need to maintain healthy intestinal bacteria and flora. This as an all-natural colon cleanse that is maintained 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.”
