Prehistoric Humans in South Africa Found to Be Adept at Technology
Researchers found that early humans had knowledge of various beneficial plants, and used them to make bedding that would not only make their shelters more comfortable but would also repel mosquitoes, flies and other bugs.
Recent archaeological evidence dating back some 77,000 years reveals our ancestors may have been more creative and industrious than previously believed. Researchers from Johannesburg’s University of the Witwatersrand have found fossilized evidence leading to this conclusion at an ancient cliff shelter known as Sibudu, near the western South African City of Durban.
The researchers found that early humans had knowledge of various beneficial plants, and used them to make bedding that would not only make their shelters more comfortable but would also repel mosquitoes, flies and other bugs. The bedding consisted of layers of different grasses and leaves that did not appear to be randomly assembled but done in a methodical way.
These early hunter-gatherers may have also used these same plants for medicinal purposes because they are used for that reason even today. Evidence also indicates that the ancient Sibudu used bows and arrows, most likely used for hunting, which shows an early understanding of complex technologies that would provide advantages over their environment and possible sources of food. Other evidence shows that they were also making use of shells, engraving and using stone for tools.
“These findings give us more insight into how and why humans have survived and thrived when many other species did not,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). “It helps us to better understand our evolution, and how we might make use of this information in our modern lives when it comes to diet and lifestyle choices.”
