Skip the Diet Pills and Supplements for Your Health, Say Experts

Autopsy results for ex-NFL player and film star Bubba Smith, who died on August 3, have recently been released and the cause of death was an overdose of the diet pill phentermine, as ruled by the L.A. county coroner.

“Diet pills and supplements are responsible for many deaths and serious complications annually,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). TurboCharged® is a groundbreaking 8-Step program that defies common weight-loss theories. It successfully delivers body-defining rapid fat loss, accelerates metabolism, and improves health and odds of longevity without gimmicks, supplements or special equipment

Over the years, the FDA has pulled several diet drugs off the market.  However, this usually takes time and only comes after numerous reports of ill effects, including heart attacks and strokes.  It can take months or years before the risks are assessed.

"Diet pills can be addictive, either from the substances they contain or due to fear of regaining weight.  These pills are not natural and their effect doesn’t last,” adds Dian.  “When a person stops taking them, the excess fat will return if the underlying cause of weight gain is left unaddressed.  In addition, if a person’s diet is poor to begin with, eating less food will result in nutritional deficiencies that will result in other health problems.  Diet pills are expensive; they are often advertised with a “reasonable” monthly cost that can add up over time depending on the amount of weight you need to lose.  Finally, diet supplements have not undergone any safety testing and may not even work.  Manufacturers’ slick marketing and unsubstantiated claims are common.”

“It is much better and safer to build your diet around the foods we are adapted to eat from hundreds of thousands of years of evolution,” says Tom.  “Avoiding the artificial products so common in today’s supermarkets is the first step to ideal weight and optimal health.”
