Strokes Rise with Weight of Pregnant Women

According to recent studies, one factor may be that more women are overweight when they become pregnant, which can add to the likelihood of complications from diabetes and high blood pressure.

Over the last 12 years, the incidence of strokes during pregnancy or shortly after has significantly increased, according to a recent study in the journal Stroke. Researchers found that the number of strokes reported in 2006-07 was 54% higher than reported in 1994-95. “We were alarmed [by these findings],” said lead author Elena Kuklina, an epidemiologist at the CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention in Atlanta, in an AFP report.

What is the cause of the rise? According to Kuklina, one factor may be that more women are overweight when they become pregnant, which can add to the likelihood of complications from diabetes and high blood pressure.

“The factors driving the obesity epidemic and increases in other modern diseases are the main cause of the rise in strokes,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

“The modern western diet, which is now centered on refined, processed, manufactured, ‘heat and eat’ foods, is destroying our health,” adds Dian. “Children and adolescents are now developing poor health conditions and ‘diseases’ that previously only affected older adults.”

In TurboCharged, the Griesels explain why these foods cause problems, and offer a healthy lifestyle alternative. Many modern diseases, they say, can be avoided or reversed by adopting a proper diet and lifestyle program. Results come quickly when you remove the causes. Despite our small genetic differences, we are 99.9% alike and we all will thrive on a diet based on natural foods and activities.
